We Take Animal Rescue/Welfare Seriously
Spay/Neuter is the Best Way to Save Lives

Robeson County Humane Society & Friends for Life Shelter, located in Lumberton, North Carolina, is the only state licensed no-kill, non-profit rescue facility in Robeson County.  We received our 501c 3 designation in 1990.  The RCHS and its Friends for Life shelter were founded to find loving homes for adoptable animals while promoting responsible pet ownership with an emphasis on spaying and neutering. RCHS's Friends for Life staff and volunteers care for all the dogs and cats living at the facility until appropriate forever homes are found for them. We welcome your gifts of time, talent, and treasure.  There are many volunteer opportunities, both at the shelter and with other humane society projects, that we need our communities to help with.

Letter from the RCHS TEAM:

Adopt Don’t Shop…
for your next Fur-ever Friend

They say love cannot be bought, and in most circumstances, I would agree with that philosophy. In the case of pet adoption, I will make an exception.

When you adopt a pet, you are saving a life, sometimes several, and gaining a lifetime companion. Adopting a pet provides a home, healthcare, and love to an animal in need. It frees a spot for another to takes its place as it too waits for his/her human to come along.

Adoption also makes a dent in the puppy mill industry where animals are bred constantly in sometimes cruel, filthy conditions. When they can no longer breed the animal is killed and tossed out like garbage or dumped alive to fend for itself. The puppies from these facilities are often sickly and may have genetic issues. Think long and hard before you purchase a pet from someone who breeds animals this way. While it is true that there are reputable breeders of specific breeds and there is an important place for breeders who keep specific breeds from becoming extinct; the vast majority of backyard breeders are interested in quick money accomplished through volume. If a deal on an animal seems too good to be true, it is. Reputable breeders know that their animals can command top prices. The animals are registered, have vet records that prove medical care, are kept in pristine conditions, and receive love and socialization.  If a specific breed is what you desire, then make sure you seek out a reputable breeder.

If your main goal is a wonderful, loving family companion then look no further than your local rescue. I myself am partial to the Robeson County Humane Society.    We have beautiful, sweet, fur-babies that are eagerly waiting for a loving family to take them home. They come here for all sorts of reasons. Maybe the owner is moving, being deployed, has died, or is too sick to provide care for their pet. Sometimes it is from a cruelty or abuse situation. Occasionally it is because of the puppy mill horrors mentioned previously. In Robeson County it is often due to a lack of spay/neuter of pets who keep having litters.

Regardless of how they get here, every animal that comes in our doors receives love, vet care, food, and shelter until a great home is found for them. It is done at a cost. We receive no federal government funding. We are not supported by the U.S. Humane Society as some assume.  We survive entirely on donations, grants, private endowments, and individual support.  Basically, we depend on all of you to help us help them. Covid-19 has affected everyone. It has especially hit non-profits like us. Every penny counts. Some think adoption fees are high. Our adoption fees do not even cover the food, shelter, and staff costs associated with caring for the animal until it goes home. The fee never even gets to the vet costs or vaccines provided.  We need all of you. Either through donations, volunteer hours, fosters, or as adopters.

When adopting a pet, you get priceless, lifetime love…at a bargain.

Life long Veterinary Care is Vital to your pet's Health.

We provide initial vet care for our animals. Health assessment, vaccines, emergency care, spay/neuter, as well as heartworm and flea/tick  prevention are done at intake, After adoption you should schedule an appointment with your regular vet to get started on the right track with your pet. Once it is given a clean bill of health (there are some conditions we can't foresee or diagnose) your pet should be seen annually by your vet for a physical examination, vaccines, parasite test, dental check, and any needed bloodwork or other tests that your veterinarian recommends. Older dogs may need to be seen more often.
